2008 Mock Draft
2008 Mock Draft
1. Miami - Chris Long - DE - Virginia - A Parcells type of player with character and the physical skills to match.
2. St. Louis - Jake Long - OT - Michigan - Pace isn't getting younger and Long is a blue chipper. This guy is tenacious and just a notch below last years top OT Joe Thomas the pro-bowler with the Browns.
3. Atlanta - Matt Ryan - QB - Boston College - Ryan is a Peyton Manning type of leader that possesses a solid skill set in all areas. While Ryan may not wow you, he brings alot of pluses to the football field. A winner with a winners mentality. Why would Atlanta pass him up?
4. Oakland - Glenn Dorsey - DT - LSU - The Raiders had the old version of Warren Sapp, how about the young version? Dorsey quite simply has the skills to dominate from the defensive tackle position which isn't easy to find.
5. Kansas City - Sedrick Ellis - DT - USC - The Chiefs would like eitherof the Long's, Dorsey or Ryan but still get one heck of a player in Ellis of USC. While Dorsey may at times be more disruptive, Ellis is more consistent and he does have pro bowl potential.
6. New York Jets - Darren McFadden - RB - Arkansas - A bit of a flyer here, but he would be my pick. This kid has Adrian Peterson type skill so why not take him? Tell me the Jets fans wouldn't go nuts if this selection was made. Game breakers like this are not a dime a dozen. This pick could very well be Gholston as well.
7. New England - Vernon Gholston - DE - Ohio State - The Patriots need help on defense so Gholston would be a good fit. A fierce pass rusher that could play DE or OLB in the Patriots scheme. The weakness at corner is apparent so the fast rising Rodgers-Cromartie could also be the choice.
8. Baltimore - Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie - CB - Tennessee St. - Jenkins and Mckelvin are more solid corners but as good as they are Cromartie has the size and athletic skills to be all world. A bit of a risk this high, but potentially great corners don't come along to often.
9. Cincinnati - Derrick Harvey - DE - Florida - The Bengals need help at linebacker as well so rivers of USC would also be a solid choice. Harvey has enough size and athletic skills to be a real player along the Bengals defensive front.
10. New Orleans - Mike Jenkins - CB - South Florida - Jenkins is the most solid corner in this draft. Jenkins has good size and speed and he is tough to boot. A very good player with a bright future.
11. Buffalo - Leodis McKelvin - CB - Troy - This kid could be every bit as good as Cromartie and Jenkins and Buffalo may have finally found their replacement for Nate Clements. McKelvin Is a real ballhawk with exceptional quickness.
12. Denver - Ryan Clady - OT - Boise St - Clady is the best pure pass protector of this years tackles. Clady is a tough player with great foot work and he has the ability to play early for the Broncos. A ten year player with pro bowl potential.
13. Carolina - Rashard Mendenhall - RB - Illinois - The Panthers want QB Ryan of Boston College so if he slips a few spots look for the Panthers to try and move up. If not then pairing Mendenhall with DeAngelo Williams would make one heck of a one two punch. Mendenhall has the size, power and speed to be a featured back in the NFL.
14. Chicago - Chris Williams - OT - Vanderbilt - I am not so sure that Williams won't end up being the best tackle that comes out of this draft. He is already a skilled pass protector and although some say he is a bit soft in the running game, I don't see it. I really like this kid.
15. Detroit - Phillip Merling - DE - Clemson - Mendenhall is the choice if still on the board but the Lions do need help in their defensive front seven and Merling plays solid ball in both the passing and running games. A very solid player that would instantly make the Lions defensive front better.
16. Arizona - Keith Rivers - LB -USC - The Cardinals need help in their linebacking corp and Rivers fits the bill nicely. Rivers is versatile enough to play inside or out. A corner is also needed so instate player Cason could garner some interest.
17. Minnesota - Kenny Phillips - Safety - Miami (FL) - The Vikes need some defensive help so a player that rates as this years best safety would be a very nice selection. Phillips may not be great in any one area, but when you add up all his strengths he is a top notch prospect. Don't be to shocked if the draft's top wideout comes off the board here.
18. Houston - Aqib Talib - CB - Kansas - Talib is a big corner with the size, speed and potential to be a number one corner in the National Football League. A safety or linebacker are also potential selections.
19. Philadelphia - Limas Sweed - WR - Texas - The Eagles pass on both Jackson and Kelly to select Sweed who possesses Terrell Owens type skills.
20. Tampa Bay - DeSean Jackson - WR - California - If this guy doesn't remind you of a young Joey Galloway then who does? And we all know how much Tampa Bay Coach Jon Gruden loves Galloway. This is a tremendous value pick.
21. Washington - Malcolm Kelly - WR - Oklahoma - WOW, the Skins getting to make a selection. Kelly is a big target with big play ability. Another very nice weapon for young quarterback Jason Campbell. If teams are convinced Kelly is 100% healthy, he could go higher than this.
22. Dallas - Felix Jones - RB - Arkansas - The Cowboys don't get McFadden but settle for the other Razorback runner in the lightning quick and big play Jones. What a weapon to add alongside Marion Barber. Jones also gives the Cowboys a great kick return option as well.
23. Pittsburgh - Jeff Otah - OT - Pittsburgh - You talk about a popular pick that would also fill a need along the offensive line, Otah would be a great fit. Otah continues to rise up the draft charts and his being available here is questionable.
24. Tennessee - Devin Thomas - WR - Michigan St. - This kid had a great year for the Spartans and his showing at the combine really opened some eyes. Thomas has nice size and he is a big play waiting to happen everytime he touches the ball.
25. Seattle - Kentwan Balmer - DT - North Carolina - Auburn's Pat Sims is a bit more consistent, but Balmer is more versatile with the potential to be a top tier player.
26. Jacksonville - Quentin Groves - DE - Auburn - Jacksonville needs some help on the edge of their defensive front and Groves although a bit inconsistent is very explosive with real pass rush potential.
27. San Diego - Jonathon Stewart - RB - Oregon - Out goes Michael Turner and in comes Jonathon Stewart. Stewart is a big back with good quickness, vision and excellent power and size. It wasn't that long ago that Stewart was considered a top ten pick. A very nice compliment to future Hall of Famer LaDanian Tomlinson.
28. Dallas - Reggie Smith - CB/S - Oklahoma - Smith is a very versatile performer that could play safety or corner. With the addition of Jones earlier in the first round the addition of Smith gives the Cowboys numerous options in the secondary.
29. San Francisco - Early Doucet - WR - LSU - The 49ers may have struck it rich getting Doucet after a number of other wideouts came off the board. Doucet is a very polished player that conjurs up comparisons to the Packers Gregg Jennings and the Colts Marvin Harrison.
30. Green Bay - Branden Albert - OG/OT - Virginia - If Ted Thompson sticks to his guns and selects the best player available then this selection could come down to Albert, OT Cherilus , TEs Bennett, Davis or Arizona CB Antoine Cason. Albert is a true blue chipper that has the skills to be outstanding at guard or tackle. Albert is a fast rising player that could go in the top twenty in this years draft.
31. New England - Forfeited this selection
32. New York Giants - Antoine Cason - CB - Arizona - The Giants also like linebackers Dan Connor and Jerod Mayo but select Cason who many considered a top fifteen selection if he had entered last years draft. Cason isn't a blazer, but he is plenty fast enough and he is tough with very nice ball skills and the smarts to be a top end type player.

What To Do With The Number One Pick
"The Miami Dolphins are on the clock". Bill Parcells and his Miami Dolphins have the top overall pick in the draft and now they, ok, Parcells must decide which way he wants to (re)build the floundering Phins. Most draft 'experts" would think that Parcells would start with arguably the best defensive tackle in the draft, LSU's Glenn Dorsey. He would be a perfect fit as the nose tackle in Parcells 3-4 defense and anchor a poor Dolphins defensive line for years to come. He has it all, size, strength, quickness and a winning attitude, but he also has an injury history and history is not on his side. There have not been to many defensive tackles that have been the top overall pick, nor is it a "glamour" pick. If Parcells wanted to make a "glamour" pick, he could choose between quarterbacks Matt Ryan of B.C. or Brian Brohm of Louisville. Brohm was the top overall QB prospect entering the year and had a "down year" according to some, while Ryan elevated his draft stock with a great year (both individually and team wise). But the problem here is the Dolphins draft John Beck in the 2nd round last year, so would they, ahh I mean Parcells want to draft another QB high in back to back years?
That leads me to the best running back to come out in a long time, Darren McFadden from Arkansas. He is the complete package and would provide the Dolphins one of the most explosive backfields in the NFL if he were to team with Ronnie Brown (who is coming off a knee injury). Another thing to keep in mind is McFadden's college OC (David Lee) has been hired as the Dolphins QB coach. No one knows more about "Run DMC" then Lee and would give the Dolphins first hand knowledge of what kind of person McFadden is (on and off the field). Parcells love to run the ball and control the clock, McFadden would allow him to do that and then some. Finally Parcells could parley the pick for more picks to a team that desperately wants Dorsey, McFadden, Ryan or Brohm. Parcells has done this in the past and it has worked out for him and in this case (with the Dolphins) it may be the best thing to do. The Dolphins need to add talent at many different positions and by adding picks, the Dolphins could be on the rise quickly. Things should get interesting in South Beach in the upcoming weeks, but then again, isn't always when Bill Parcells is running the show?

Why Hire A College Coach
There are a few NFL head coaching positions available this off season and like in life 4 things are certain this time of the year, death, taxes, Brett Favre playing on Sundays when the Packers are on the field and if there is a head coaching opening in the NFL, a college coaches name will be linked to it. That is the case yet again, with the Falcons reportedly going hard after USC Trojan head coach, Pete Carroll. "Ceaser" (as he is referred to out here in L.A.) has said he doesn't want to leave USC, but we have to be realistic here, if the Falcons, or any other NFL team were to offer Carroll a boat load of money and complete control over the football operations, he would have to take a hard look at it, as anyone else would. I just don't think Atlanta is the best place for him (we'll get into why later).
You would think the NFL owners would have learned their lesson with the Butch Davis, Dennis Erickson, Steve Spurrior, Nick Saben and most recently Bobby Petrino's NFL coaching performances. The NFL is a complete different game then college football. Players are earning more then the coaches, practices are more technique and game planning rather then hitting and teaching, and players in the NFL (for a variety of reasons) don't respond to the in your face, rah rah rah attitude that college coaches have to have. But most importantly NFL players want to "go to war" with a guy that has been there before, and most coaches that get hired to coach an NFL team from college don't have that proven track record so the players don't "buy in" to what the coaches are saying.
There have been exceptions to the rule, most notably Jimmy Johnson, but that was over a decade ago and when he was hired the salary cap was not around and you could cut a player with no cap hit, the salaries were not as high as they are today and the players knew the coach had the final say, unlike today where players will go over the coaches head to the owner or G.M. to get what they want. Also, (other then Al Davis and Jerry Jones) most owners let the football people handle the football operations and they reaped the benefits. But in today's NFL we have the Jones, Davises, Dan Snyder's and Arthur Blank's want to be apart of the player personnel department because they believe by watching ESPN or the NFL Network highlight shows they know more then the people that actually have spent a great deal of their life evaluating players. I will say that in Al Davis' defense he coached and scouted in the AFL/NFL before and STILL has a good eye for talent even if he looks like death mourned over.
Now to Pete Carroll. WHY would he want to leave the standard for all college football programs to go to the Falcons who are in cap hell, devoid of talent (other then DeAngelo Hall), have an over barring owner who's locker room has issues, it is an unstable situation. One could make a case that USC could actually beat the Falcons if they played today. OK, they may not beat them, but it would be ALOT closer game then people would think. Carroll has coached in the NFL before with the Jets for a year and the Patriots where he won a division title and led them to 2 playoff apprearences in 3 years before being let go, but lets make no mistake about it, he is a far more successful college coach then NFL coach. He belongs in college with his go getter attitude and ebullient personality. If the Falcons were smart they would hire Jim Caldwell (the Colts QB coach) who would be a terrific coach. He has creditability on the offensive side of the ball, a Super Bowl ring and would be a great fit in the Atlanta community.
But the story will never change in the NFL. Carroll's name, along with Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, Charlie Weiss and who ever is the "flavor of the month" is will always be the apple of some NFL owners eye and they will try to take another chance on the college coach and will soon find out it won't be the same "college experience" they were hoping for.

Should They Stay Or Should They Go
This is the time of the year that gets the draft nicks juices flowing. It is when draft eligible players can declare their intentions for the NFL draft. For select few it is a no brainer, but for most it is one of the difficult choices they will ever have to make. Every year the NFL has a few college players that belief they are ready for the NFL and go pro, only to be a late round pick, or not drafted at all. The process to find out what NFL teams think of them is a flawed one, but for the most part, it works. I will use West Virginia running back Steve Slaton and Central Florida running back Kevin Smith as my examples.
Slaton had 2 outstanding season for the Mountaineers and entering this season was being looked upon as a possible 1st round prospect, but he didn't have the type of year that would secure a 1st round grade, and infact, dropped to the 3rd or 4th round according to some scouts. They question his size to be an "every down back" and wonder if he is a product of the "spread offense" ran by West Virginia. Smith was the polar opposite of Slaton going into this year. He had ran for 2,112 in his 2 years at UCF then this year he exploded for 2,567 yards and 29 td's. He is not as "explosive" as Slaton, but has a bigger frame and better vision. He announced 2 weeks ago he would return to UCF to work on improving his game, but has since changed his mind and will go pro. He is currently expected to be a 2nd round pick at the earliest, possibly falling into the mid 3rd round.
The bottom line is it is a crap shoot for these young men that want to fore fill their dream to be an NFL player. Until the NFL and the NCAA adopts a system that would allow college players to re-enter school (as long as they don't sign with an agent) if they are not drafted you will have the Darius Walkers (the former Notre Dame RB that declared to go pro after his junior year only to not be drafted) who belief what they are being told by people that don't care about these young men and don't have those kids best interests at heart. Slaton made the right move staying in school for his senior year. Next years RB class is not as strong as this years and he could be one of the 1st taken if he has a big year, while Smith also made the right choice in my mind since UCF's QB situation is not the greatest and he would be the only bullet in their offensive gun.
